The Windows installer needs to install QuickTime because iTunes requires it. QuickTime's built into OS X, so it's not needed there.

Heh according to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html during installation on XP with Service Pack 2 or above Bonjour will configure the firewall for you.

That's, um, a bit dodgy.

I actually didn't even notice Bonjour being installed when I put iTunes on my Windows box at work. *shrug*

I guess my years of Mac use have just made me confident that installers always treat me well ;)

In that case, it might be useful, but where was the step during installation that said "We're about to put Bonjour on your machine. It will be used for X, Y, Z. You might want to let it through your firewall, and here's why..."

I know that the Mac version of iTunes uses Rendezvous/Bonjour to share music libraries easily... isn't that what the PC would use it for? If so, it's exceptionally useful.

Bonjour is a new and unwelcome addition to the installer. I can't imagine why Apple thought it worth including. Perhaps in time the iTunes installer will come bundled with Tiger.

I've never liked the inclusion of QuickTime either - every time it installs, I have to turn off the tray icon and remove its shortcut from 101 places.

The installer also putting Quicktime on has been happening for several months now - it used to be the only way to get the new Quicktime for a few weeks but have released it standalone again. This was for the windows install, though.
