Coffee Times

As I discussed (or perhaps threatened is more appropriate) on Twitter recently (I’m @mattgemmell, by the way), I decided to try my hand at creating a personal podcast. This isn’t about Cocoa/Mac/iPhone programming, though I do discuss what I’m working on right now; it’s more about what I’m generally up to at the moment, what I’m thinking about or interested in, and suchlike.

If you’re looking for all-techie stuff, this probably isn’t for you. If on the other hand you’re interested in hearing me massage my already dangerously-large ego, then you might get some enjoyment from it. I’ve split it into sections, with contents as follows:

  • Coding: the dock-related app
  • Videogames: Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition, Myst for iPhone
  • Thoughts: Legacy
  • Cool Stuff: ColorToy
  • New Toys: Netbook
  • Reading: H. P. Lovecraft
  • Movies: Transformers 2, Harry Potter 6, Iron Man 2
  • Music: La Roux

Fair warning: it’s pretty much unscripted except for brief notes, and I deliberately did it in one take; it’ll probably be rough around the edges. But it’s about me personally, so I wanted it to be real. Maybe it works and maybe it doesn’t, but it was at least fun to do.

For best results, you can subscribe to the podcast in iTunes (that link will open iTunes, naturally).

If you’re using some other podcast-listening application which supports podcast RSS feeds, you can probably subscribe using this URL: http://mattgemmell.com/podcasts/coffee_times.rss

Alternatively, you can just listen to this episode. It’s an MP3, and it’s around 23 minutes long.

And please, leave a comment.

  1. I can’t find it on iTunes yet… Is it up?

  2. Hi Blake,
I’ve submitted it to iTunes; they have to review it first, so hopefully it’ll show up over the weekend.

You can subscribe right now via the RSS URL listed in the post above, if you like.

  3. You can also post the link as itpc://mattgemmell.com/podcasts/coffee_times.rss and clicking it will take the user directly to iTunes and subscribe, all in one go. (It won’t go to the iTunes Store’s podcast directory, but straight to the list of subscribed podcasts.)

  4. Good tip, Chris – link updated.

  5. First time I’ve ever heard your voice. Almost forgot you were Scottish.

  6. I am _so_ glad you didn’t use the horrible jingle from your MDN show segment.

  8. Thanks so much for sharing. Well done, looking forward to future installments.

  9. My god, you still have that bloody accent!

Very nice podcast. The way you speak, so cool and all, you should be on the radio.

  10. Hi Matt. Thank you for this podcast. Which software and hardware (mic?) did you use to create it?

  11. Hi Ulf,

I use a Plantronics headset/mic; it’s an older version of this one. For software, I just use GarageBand 09.

  12. Hi Matt.

Sound is almost perfect. I just miss some music inbetween. ;-)

  13. I enjoyed the podcast as well, keep ‘em coming.

  14. Matt,

I loved the podcast, great idea, awesome to hear from the life of a fellow software dev.

    Keep ‘em coming, mate!

  15. Loved the podcast, but it was a little quiet. The iPhones’ Sound Check doesn’t make any difference when it’s playing through the car stereo via the dock connector. So I had to turn it up to 11 in order hear it while driving. Well, up to 22 actually, and even then it was still quite quist. Most music is normally fine at 12-16 when on the motorway, although Bohemian Rhapsody really demands 18-20 (just for a frame of reference) 8).

  16. [...] I came across a blog the other day with the subtitle “Modesty is Lying.”  I chuckled when I first read this subtitle.  If someone truly knows their stuff, they would indeed be lying to put on a false modesty.  (The author, who is a programmer, does admit to a dangerously large ego.)
