Last Thursday was the first CompSoc (Computing Society) event of the year; a pub quiz upstairs in Curler’s on Byres Rd. Despite being organised in little more than a week, the night was a huge success. Crazy mad props to Derek and his social committee for organising it.

My adopted team was Dickman’s Daughters (named in honour of Dr. Peter Dickman, feared lecturer of Operating Systems 3 and Distributed Algorithms and Systems 4, and author of the most difficult quiz round), comprised of myself, Nintendo John, Dean, Dave and Elliot (Rory defected to another team not long after the start). Here’s a pic of the team and a few other guys. From left to right: Disco Stu, Nintendo John, Dean, Dave, me, Elliot, Gary, E-wing, and Rory in front. After being in 1st or 2nd place for a while towards the end, we eventually came in 3rd, winning a box of Celebrations. We were duly pleased.

As I said, the evening was a major success, with everyone seeming to have a really good time. After it finished up, a group of us went up to Lilybank Gardens and the Boyd Orr building and filmed a kind of brief drunken spoof “welcome to CompSoc” video, starring myself. No doubt that’ll show up on the web before too long, as yet another example of me making a complete twunt of myself. Ah well.

Here’s looking forward to more CompSoc events slightly later in the year. For what it’s worth, here’s a pic of the CompSoc board (minus Martin the Sports Convenor). Sounds like a good night out. Just one question: how did you manage to get so many of the summer crew onto the CompSoc board? I can’t figure out if that’s a good thing or not for your fellow puter-heads, but I think I maybe deserve a position on the board as well. Honarary Absent Member, something like that.

You can be honorary vice-transvestite if you like, after our esteemed president.

It was a good night though. Especially since my team (the mighty “We’re Building A Spacker Tree” team) won. Big props to Stuwee, John E-Wing, and Chris for the victory.

And that, strangely enough, is the truth. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have been able to affiliate with the SRC. Whether they sort out their paperwork is another matter, of course…
