Touch Notation


Within the last twelve to eighteen months, I’ve crossed a threshold whereby the vast majority of my work is now aimed at touch-screen devices. I often have to sketch out feature specs, interaction designs and so forth, and I enjoy working on paper whenever I can. I quickly encountered a problem: touch-screen gestures are difficult to describe concisely. To solve this problem, I created a means of talking about such gestures symbolically; I call it Touch Notation.

Future directions


I’ve been thinking lately about my business, Instinctive Code, and my future directions with it. I’ve been running Instinctive Code for more than three years now, and things are going better than ever. Up until now I’ve been primarily focused on providing development services, and will continue to do so – indeed, I have some very exciting work lined up over the next few months. As I’ve mentioned previously, though, I want to expand the software side of the business this year.

Creative Space and iPad


Probably the single biggest question about the iPad is: who or what is it for? Common answers to that question are usually directed towards casual computer users, where indeed the iPad has a significant potential market. But I’m not a casual user; I’m a developer. I want to share a few thoughts about what iPad means to me, and how I’ll be using it.

NSConference 2009


I’m a little late in posting this, but two weeks ago I attended the first ever NSConference, a Mac developer conference based here in the UK (in Hertfordshire, England).

2008 in review


When did it get to be 2009? I have a vague memory of it being January 2008, then an extended blur of work, and now my iPhone informs me it’s an entire year later. Accordingly, I wanted to post a quick retrospective on my 2008.
